A Carson City man was arrested Friday on multiple felony charges including car theft and vehicle burglary after an alert casino security guard called police about a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot that had been reported stolen, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

David Colin Haselwander was arrest at 3:11 p.m. in the 3800 block of South Carson Street on charges of auto burglary, commercial burglary, uttering a forged instrument, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of a stun gun by an ex-felon. Other charges include suspicion of possession of burglary tools and misdemeanor charges of possession of stolen property, contempt of court and obtaining money under false pretenses.

According to the arrest report, a casino security guard advised there was a vehicle in the parking lot they believed to be stolen because it was listed on a Reno police “hot list.” The vehicle was confirmed stolen by Reno Police Department. As officers responded, security was asked to keep track of the driver and the vehicle itself.

Deputies met with security who advised they watched Haselwander exit the vehicle and go inside the casino where he went to a bar. Deputies arrived on scene and approached the suspect and gave verbal instructions to surrender. The suspect did without incident and was taken into custody.

He was read his Miranda rights and he stated he understood. He was asked how he got to the casino. Haselwander said he walked. He was informed that video surveillance showed his answer to be untrue. He then told the officer someone driving a Chrysler 300 dropped him off. The investigating deputy told him that wasn’t true either. The officer asked him about the stolen vehicle. Haselwander stated he knew nothing about it and requested a lawyer, the arrest report states.

The stolen vehicle was processed. Inside officers found burglary tools, two Home Depot credit cards, a US Bank checkbook and a cellular phone. Also found was a handheld taser, and a small envelope that contained three pieces of jewelry and a gemstone. Deputies contacted the account holder on the documents, who said he had been home during his lunch break, parked his vehicle, went inside and came back an hour later and realized someone entered the vehicle and stole items inside, the arrest report states.

The victim said among the stolen items were the Home Depot credit cards, a pair of glasses, a cell phone, wallet and miscellaneous papers. He also told officers someone had cashed a check against his account with the stolen checks in the amount of $328.88 at the bank branch of East William and Stewart streets. He said he was informed by bank staff who said they had cashed the check and had video of the person who had cashed it. The victim told officers he wanted to press charges against whoever burglarized his vehicle, stole his property and cashed the check against his account, the arrest report states.

Deputies examined the checkbook found in the stolen car and located a carbon of the check with David C. Haselwander in the “pay to the order of” section. It appeared the check was cashed in the amount of $328.88. Based on the timeline, stolen items in the car Haselwander was driving and his name being on the check carbon, he was booked on the charges. Bail: $175,274.
